Car Innovation of the Future: Gracenote MoodGrid

Have you ever been in such a bad or good mood that you wanted your music to reflect it? Well look no further than the Gracenote MoodGrid. This technology, which is already an Android Tablet App, allows you to create a music playlist on a grid and select what kind of mood you are in. There is a different mood on each axis, Positive, Energetic, Calm and Dark. When you touch a point on the graph that is created by these four moods, Gracenote MoodGrid automatically creates a playlist to your specification. The songs are pulled from your music player, or subscription service like Spotify.

The great thing about the Gracenote MoodGrid is that it has been scaled down and implemented with Garmin which means it could be used in vehicles, such a a Mazda, this year!

Celtics Pull a Rabbit out of their Hat: Gain Back to Back Wins

Celtics Look for their First Win

With an 0-3 record, the Boston Celtics are looking to rebound against the Detroit Pistons tonight at the TD Bank North Garden. Both teams are looking for their first win tonight and Boston is looking to avoid their worst start in 42 years. With Pierce still questionable for tonight's game, Boston will have to improve their defense greatly and minimize the amount of turnovers they give up (an NBA League leading 18.7 turnovers per game).

Key Matchup: Rodney Stuckey vs. Rajon Rondo

While Rondo seems to have the upper-hand on Stuckey both offensively and defensively; If Rondo continues to commit turnovers Stuckey could have the last laugh.

Are you often distracted by your phone while driving? Have you ever been driving your Mazda and seen someone swerving on the road because they are on the phone? Researchers from the Stevens Institute of Technology and Rutgers in New Jersey may have a solution to this problem...

These researchers have created a program that when you are using your cellphone the Bluetooth connection and speakers in your car can detect it and shut your phone off. The even cooler part of this technology is that it can shut down a phone with about 95% accuracy but also allow passengers to make phone calls because it can tell where the signal is coming from.

The Grousbeck Center for Students and Technology

Wellesley Mazda would like to congratulate the Perkins School for the Blind on their new technology center! The Grousbeck Center for Students and Technology is a state of the art facility that not only allows students to try out some of the newest technological gadgets but also creates an environment where students can socialize and bond with one another. This 17,000 square foot technology center contains a cafe, fully equipped radio station, talking campus model, tactical world map and much, much more! Another great function of the Grousbeck Center for Students and Technology is that it also acts as a World class teaching facility, allowing educators all over the world to communicate with one another through iPad technology. This will lead to more communication between educators which creates the ability to learn different learning techniques, styles and curriculum.

Our very own Joe Shaker had a first hand look at the new Grousbeck Center for Students and Technology and was truly amazed; "Having a place to use the latest technology as well as an area to hangout and socialize are two huge advancements that further make Perkins the leading school of its kind. I was amazed when I saw the Grousbeck Center."

Wellesley Mazda Gets Rocked!

Finally Wellesley Mazda has gone to Monday Night Raw! It was our first time to this great event and we didn't know what to expect. What was the outcome of the event? Possibly one of the greatest nights we have had in a long time. Not only did we get to see the Rock "ELECTRIFY" the crowd but we also got to see a surprise wrestler step into the ring, non-other than the Hardcore Legend himself Mic Foley! The icing on the cake for us here at Wellesley Mazda was seeing John Cena, who was born and raised in Massachusetts, comeback to Boston!

We can't wait for Survivor Series this weekend and hope that John Cena and The Rock can beat the Miz and R-Truth!

Technology of the Future: the i-Stop

Mazda is already planning for innovation in the United States for the year 2016. This technology is called the i-Stop and will help fuel efficiency in Mazda vehicles. Already winning awards in Japan, the i-Stop is Mazda's new start-stop system. This means that when your 2016 Mazda comes to a stop, such as when you have your foot on the break at a red light, the i-Stop technology will stop your Mazda's pistons from moving. Then when you lift your foot off the break and step on the accelerator, for instance when the stop light turns green, the engine restarts in a split second. Thus the driver never really knows it is happening but yet conserves some fuel and holds off going to the gas station for a little more time.

Here at Wellesley Mazda we think that both the i-Stop and Mazda's SKYACTIV technology are amazing and we can't wait to see what Mazda comes up with next!

The Mysterious Check Engine Light: What does it mean?

Have you ever been driving down the highway and all the sudden, a faint glow comes from your car's dashboard? You realize that it is your check engine light and you immediately panic. Does this mean you need to go in for a repair on your engine or is it something more minor than that? Many people ask themselves these same questions everyday, so what are some of the main causes for your mysterious check engine light to come on?

CarMD recently collected data on 170,000 vehicles that have been repaired from 1996 to 2010 and examined what are the main reasons for that pesky check engine light to come on. The following is what they found in their analysis:

Faulty Oxygen Sensor
A Loose or Non-Existent Gas Cap
Damaged Catalytic Convertor
A Mass Air Flow Sensor Malfunction
Misfiring Spark Plugs

As you can see the reasons for your vehicle's check engine light to go off range from extremely serious issues to minor repairs. The moral of this story is when that check engine light goes off, get your vehicle checked immediately because it is better to be safe than sorry, even if it is a loose gas cap!

Blind Driver Technology

Dennis Hong, the founder and director of RoMeLa, is a central figure for several breakthroughs in robot design and engineering. His latest innovation could potentially become a huge breakthrough in the automotive industry; Mr. Hong is trying to invent a car for the blind.

Now this isn't a "self driving" car but a car where "a non-sighted driver can determine speed, proximity, route and drive independently." To make this independent driving experience available for non-sighted drivers, Mr. Hong has used such tools as GPS, laser rangefinders and robotics to build and test out his prototype.

Wellesley Mazda is a supporter of Mr. Hong's recent innovations. We feel that this technology could lead to many new innovations that would help in other everyday activities, such as helping blind students in classrooms or helping are friends at the Perkins School for the Blind.

This IPad technology is used to give the customer a better overall experience and better understanding of Mazda as a whole. Through the Mazda IPad application, customers can learn about different Mazda makes and models, features and accessories and even Mazda's heritage. As Mr. Shaker said in the USA Today article, "people want to make better use of their time at dealerships," and this application is a great step forward.

Aerosol Cans: They can explode in intense heat
Prescription Medications: Heat has the ability to change the chemical makeup of medications
Lighters: Also, can and will explode
Electronics: These devices such as, GPS units, IPods and cell phones don't like extreme hot or cold. It will shorten their lifespan.
CD's and DVD's
Sunglasses: If you have wire frames they can become warped in the sun.
Plastic Bottles: The chemicals making up the bottles can seep into your drink.
Crayons: This wax little buggers will melt every where. Not fun to try to clean up.
Lipsticks: Another melter.
Soda Cans: This is another item that will explode in extreme temperatures.

Mazda's New Lightweight Miata

The future of the Mazda MX-5 Miata looks lighter than ever. The engineers have been instructed by the powers that be at Mazda to decrease the current weight of the Miata by 720 lbs. The vehicle currently stands at an impressively light weight of 2,480 lbs, placing the new model at around only 1,760 lbs.

How does Mazda plan on accomplishing this task you may ask, "turning to high-strength steel for the vehicle's chassis and contemplating a smaller-displacement engine." The most unique method I have heard is putting the owner's manual on a USB drive instead of the paper form we have all come to know and love.

Now whether or not they will be able to accomplish this daunting task has yet to be determined. None of the engineers seem to be fully convinced its possible. Even if they cannot reach the golden 1,760 lbs it will be noticeably lighter than the 2011 model.

All New Mazda CX-5 Caught on Camera

Mazda's new CX-5 is to be premiered at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September but until then they have been working tirelessly to have it ready. This small crossover has elements from not only the Minagi concept, shown at the Geneva Motor Show, but the Shinari design concept. At the moment the vehicle still gets much of its design from the CX-7 but the closer we get to September the more it becomes a whole new vehicle. The all new CX-5 will be a replacement for the Mazda Tribute, which is being taken out of production.

Look, Smell and Hear Your Way to a Safer Car

Many of us ignore the odd rattling noses or smells coming from our vehicles. The problem is that these are usually the sign a more serious issue. Here are a few of the warning signs your vehicle might be giving you and what they could mean.

Sight:

symptom: Vehicle is leaning to one sign
diagnosis: Could be an indication of a broken spring

symptom: Puddles underneath your vehicle
diagnosis: Leaking coolant or oil

Smell:

symptom: Turn on heater and it smells sweet
diagnosis: This is a possible leaking heater core

Celebrities Play Poker for Children's Charity

On April 2, 2011 Wellesley Mazda helped sponsor a local poker tournament to help raise money for The Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation. The event was held to raise money to send 150 inner-city kids to Camp Northbound in Maine for a week during the summer. And according to brothers, Donnie and Jimmy Wahlberg, they raised just enough money to cover camp this year.

The event was held at the Tewksbury Country Club and it was packed. Doc Rivers coach of the Celtics along with Ken Casey from Dropkick Murphies are among the Celebs that decided to step out for a night of some good old fashion poker playing. Texting while Driving: Worse than Driving Drunk.

It is against the law in Connecticut and Massachusetts to text while driving. Since this info-graph (see above image) came out 11 more states have added this law to their books making a total of 30. The Governors Highway Safety Association has a great information on each state and their laws regarding cell phones.

51.4% of teenagers admitted to texting while driving and 45.1% of 20-24 year olds. Just by talking on the phone you are 4 times more likely to cause an accident which is equivalent to your chances when driving drunk (.08 BAC). The scary part? You are 8 times more likely to cause an accident texting.

2011 Mazda CX-9 Wins Motor Trend SUV Comparison

Mazda CX-9 comes out on top in a recent Motor Trend SUV comparison testing, coming out in the May 2011 issue. The comparison took 6 SUVs and pitted them against each other and here is how they stood up against the challenge:

1st Place: Mazda CX-9

3rd Place: Chevrolet Traverse
5th Place: Honda Pilot
6th Place: Ford Explorer

2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition

In order to celebrate hitting 900,000 MX-5 Miatas produced, Mazda has rolled out a special edition of the beloved roadster. It will run you around $30,925 for a manual transmission and $31,525 for a six-speed automatic. The price will be worth it considering how rare it will be to find one; Mazda is only making 750 units.

The Special Edition MX-5 Miata is based off the fully-equipped Grand Touring model with a Power Retractable Hard Top. It also comes in only two colors Sparkling Black Mica or Dolphin Gray Mica while the interior includes heated leather seats with gray stitching and chrome treatments.

Both manual and automatic transmissions can enjoy the 167-horsepower, 140 lb-ft torque 2.0-liter four cylinder engine. This vehicle is only 2,593 pounds and has a nearly 50:50 weight distribution. There isn't anything out there like this pint-sized mini-van and wont be until Ford comes out with its C-Max later this year. This is a great vehicle for a small family who just needs a little extra room (or the ability to separate the kids during long drives). There is plenty of cargo space especially when the third row seats are folded down. The third row offers enough leg room for a child to fit comfortably. However, at age 22 I believe it would be a little tight, think sardines. Mazda has posted an awesome video from the LA Auto Show that can better illustrate just has much space this vehicle has.

Mazda showcased its concept car, Shinari, at the 2010 Los Angeles Automotive Show. It definitely stirred up some attention from the industry with its complete overhaul of the current Mazda design. It represents a more mature and luxurious direction that Mazda will be taking in the upcoming years. I believe it is unlikely that Mazda will actually manufacture the Shinari for mass consumption but I wouldn't be surprised if in the future Mazda takes its design cues from this vehicle.

It was one of the coldest days inDecember, but it was also love at first site. The sun roof, the wonderfulinterior, the dark gray exterior and the little antenna sticking off theback. Or maybe it was the fact that this car actually had four doors, yesfour. This might seem commonplace for some, but for about five and ahalf years I had been driving a Saturn coupe that had not two, but threedoors. The third door was a strange contraption on the driver’s side thatcould open only if the driver's actual door was open. Getting outthrough the third door was not only a challenge, but reminded me ofwhat getting out of a clown car might look like -- cumbersome, yethilarious. Bottom line, and no offense to the great people at Saturn, butcars should have two doors or four doors - three just adds confusion.

I also knew it was meant to be whenI actually sat in the car. After all, being on the taller side, it's hardto fit in smaller cars, but when I sat in the Mazda you could almost hearthe cheers of joy from my knees and back. This was the car I had tobuy. Consequently, this was my first "adult" purchase aftergraduating from college and my hand shook as I signed the financing documents. I also started to think of all of the things I'd have to give up in order toafford my car and I started to break into a cold sweat. Buying thisMazda 3 was my grand entrance into the "real world." As I droveaway from the lot, I knew it was the start of something great.

Perhaps the reason I love my Mazdathe most is because it's selfless and dependable. My Mazda neverquestions why I have so many shoes in the back, or why I let pine needlesgather in the interior. It doesn't trouble me when I ask it to go oneextra mile on empty. It never complains about why I leave it outside orwhy I don't wash it every month...or every couple of months. It doesn’tget jealous when I let me boyfriend drive it, even when he’s not as gentle withthe breaks. It doesn’t become enraged ifmy parallel parking scratches a rim. Italso didn’t quit on me when one of my first harrowing experiences driving itwas through a Nor’easter for seven hours. Brake Pads 101

Hello this is Erik Olson, Service Director from Wellesley Mazda,

Brakes are probably one of the easiest repairs to understand if you know the right questions to ask.

Ask if you can go out to the shop and see the brakes.
Find out what pad thickness the brakes start out at when they are new.
Find out what the factory considers "zero lift left" or...

Brakes generally start out at 13mm in the front and 9mm in the rear

Usually the factory will discard brakes at 3mm in the front and 2mm in the rear.

If you know the size of a new brake pad and the size it is now, take your mileage now and divide by the mm used up and you will get a rough idea of how many miles you have left on your brake pads.

For instance, my front brake pads start out at a thickness of 13mm and right now, after 20,000 miles, are at 6mm. 20,000/(13-6)=2,857.14

You are estimating around 2,857 miles left on your brake pads.

How to Jump Start a Car

No one wants to be caught with a dead battery, especially duringthe holiday season. Here are some tips on how to safely jump start your carwithout damaging the battery or starter.

It is possible for batteries to explode. Makesure you turn off both cars before you proceed.
Connect the positive cable end to the positivebattery terminal of the dead battery.
Once that is complete connect the positive cableend to the positive end of the working battery.
Next connect the negative end of the cable tothe negative terminal of the working battery.
Attach the remaining negative cable to theunpainted metal of the car engine (as far away from the battery as possible). Thebelow image shows you what it will look like.

Now you just have to wait a few moments beforeyou try to start your car. If it doesn’t start, start the working car and thentry the dead one again.
When the car starts, make sure you disconnectthe cables in the opposite order.
If your car still does not start, don’t continueto try to charge it. This could lead to damage of the car’s starter. You should take the battery to a service center to get it repaired.
If you are successful you should still make sureyour car battery if fully recharged by hooking it up to a charger for thenight. You can also drive for 5 or 10 miles.

Buying a car can be stressful experience, especially when you aren’t sure of the first step to take. I sat down with a General Manager from a store that rates incredibly high on satisfaction and asked him what someone can do to better prepare themselves for the process and what you should expect from a dealership.

Start by searching dealers in your area and seeing how past customers have rated them. Google Places and Yahoo! Local are definitely great options but you might want to try dealerrater.com which is specifically dedicated to, as the title suggests, rating automotive dealers. It is important to keep an open mind because as many of us know it is impossible to satisfy everyone. If you do find a legitimate complaint see how the dealership responded them, if at all.
If you have a trade-in find out how much money you still owe on it. Also do some research to find out how much your vehicle is worth. Autotrader.com has a new feature called the trade-in marketplace. All you have to do is simply click on the Autotrader logo and enter your zip code and vehicle information. You'll receive a fast, free and guaranteed value for your car within minutes. Bring your offer to one of the dealerships they provide and even if you aren't going to buy from them, they'll still write you a check for your vehicle. They could even possibly offer you more for your vehicle.
Do research on the car you want but not only on the car you want, the equipment and packages that are important to you. For instance, perhaps you love leather seats but couldn’t care less if they were powered. You can save a lot of money by opting out of power seating and other similar functions. Not only that but consider going for an older model, right now a new 2010 has better incentives and value than a new 2011.
When you are given a quote, watch out for incentives and rebates. Most dealers will include all incentives and rebates in their discounted price, many of which you might not be eligible for. Usually there is fine print underneath however, be aware of dealerships that hide disclaimers on separate pages. If you are receiving a quote via email just ask what the incentives are. Often, you will find there is an incentive for college grads or military personnel and you might be neither. Remember, discounted prices usually don’t include things like sales tax and registration fees.
When you are at the dealership if you feel like you are being pressured into a specific car there could be several reasons. For example, the dealership will make more money if you buy one verse another or it has been on the lot for a while and they want to get rid of it.

The main thing with purchasing a vehicle is knowledge. Make sure to do your research. If you aren’t sure which car you want go to a dealership where you know you won’t be pressured to purchase and test drive a few. Then start exploring what options are out there. With the internet at your fingers there is a limitless amount of information you can find and I hope this helps you get started.

Why Maintain Correct Pressure

Under inflation or overloading creates excessive stress and heat, and can lead to tire failure. This could result in vehicle damage and/or serious injury or death.

And over inflated tire can cause uneven wear in the center of the tread. Over inflation also can make the tire more susceptible to road hazard damage and pose vehicle handling issues.

Check Your Tire Pressure

· Check tire pressure once a month and before long journeys.

· When you check the inflation, make sure the tires are cool-meaning they are not hot even from driving a mile.

· Check your spare tire to make sure it has enough air.

· Check for nails and other objects embedded that could poke a hole in the tire and cause an air leak.

MAZDA2 Music Tour Last Night

Last night at the Paradise Lounge in Boston Mazda was hosting their MAZDA2 Music Tour featuring Mayer Hawthorne and DJ Jazzy Jeff (yes, he was on Fresh Prince of Belair). It was the perfect day to be going to a show and it started at 5:30 with the gathering of VIP winners. Mazda had given out around 50 VIP tickets which gave the holder a chance to meet Mayer Hawthorne and DJ Jazzy Jeff before the show.

They definitely gave us the VIP treatment. We were usered into the hall and handed 2 free drink tickets for the night. When you entered the room you were put in line to get your picture taken at the photo booth which they emailed to you and will put onto their flickr site. You also had the chance to customize a t-shirt that would be mailed to you free of charge and you could enter for a chance to win a new MAZDA2 or an Ipod. Needless to say I partook in all of these events, though please do not judge my photobooth shot. There was also finger food set out for us and I was extremely entertained with the fact that even the napkins had Mayer Hawthorne's name inprinted on them (I might have taken one home with me).

I met up with the Wellesley Mazda VIP winner, Brendan Smith, and got an awesome picture taken with him. He is an amazing photographer and you can see the pictures he took from the show at his Flickr Page. He even got interviewed about the show by Mazda and will be up on their blog early next week! This is what Brendan had to say about the event:

"Winning tickets to this show was the pinnacle of an already amazing vacation. Through twitter, all things are possible. Mazda helped create such a fun atmosphere for the event as well. I loved the photo booth and t-mobile shirt set up and the Mazda staff were beyond helpful when it came to making sure we were having the best time possible.
It came as no surprise that the concert was spectacular, as well. All of the artists brought their A game. Gordon Voidwell was the perfect opener to get the crowd pumped. Darwin Awards: Jet Pack Take Off

The Arizona Highway Patrol were mystified when they came upon a pile of smoldering wreckage embedded in the side of a cliff rising above the road at the apex of a curve. The metal debris resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it turned out to be the vaporized remains of an automobile. The make of the vehicle was unidentifiable at the scene.

The folks in the lab finally figured out what it was, and pieced together the events that led up to its demise.

It seems that a former Air Force sergeant had somehow got hold of a JATO (Jet Assisted Take-Off) unit. JATO units are solid fuel rockets used to give heavy military transport airplanes an extra push for take-off from short airfields.

Dried desert lakebeds are the location of choice for breaking the world ground vehicle speed record.The sergeant took the JATO unit into the Arizona desert and found a long, straight stretch of road. He attached the JATO unit to his car, jumped in, accelerated to a high speed, and fired off the rocket.

The facts, as best as could be determined, are as follows:

The operator was driving a 1967 Chevy Impala. He ignited the JATO unit approximately 3.9 miles from the crash site. This was established by the location of a prominently scorched and melted strip of asphalt. The vehicle quickly reached a speed of between 250 and 300 mph and continued at that speed, under full power, for an additional 20-25 seconds. The soon-to-be pilot experienced G-forces usually reserved for dog-fighting F-14 jocks under full afterburners. The Chevy remained on the straight highway for approximately 2.6 miles (15-20 seconds) before the driver applied the brakes, completely melting them, blowing the tires, and leaving thick rubber marks on the road surface. The 2011 Mazda2 finally arrived at Wellesley Mazda! We have one sport trim level and one touring trim level, they are both manual transmission.

I took the base sport Mazda2 for a spin today and really liked it. It feels light, nimble and fast, a perfect car for city driving and highway travelling. The Mazda2 uses digital fuel gauge and doesn't have a temp gauge.

Pros:

Roomy inside, I am 6'1 and I think I have more head room in the Mazda2 than the Mazda3 and Mazda6, backseat is also livable to me, more leg room than the Mazda3.

Seats are very comfortable, better than the Mazda3 due to ample lumbar support.

Ride is quiet, fun, car is fast in 1st and 2nd gear, 0-20, 20-40 feels faster than the Mazda3 2.5L manual and Mazda6 2.5L manual.

Car is very cute.

Cons:

AC may take a while to cool down the cabin.

Manual shifter is at an awkward position to shift...

Not much room in the hatchback, I would say 2 person + overnight hiking gears will fill this car.

Stereo on base car is average.

Today I want to share with our Mazda2 lovers some insider information regarding the upcoming 2011 Mazda2!

There will be two trim level for the Mazda2 - sport and touring. They both get the 1.5L 100hp/98lb ft. 4 cyl engine and are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission.

The touring model adds 15 inch alloy wheels, fog lights, rear roof spoiler and chrome exhaust finisher over the sport model. It also has leather-trimmed steering wheel, cruise control, 6-speaker stereo (vs. 4-speakers in the sport model), trip computer (love this!) and upgraded cloth seat upholstery. All nice feature that you will use everyday.

Both models come with ABS and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) standard as well as the Electric Power-Assist Steering (EPAS). EPA mileage is 28/35 for the manual and 28/34 for the automatic transmission, pair this with a 11.3 gallons fuel tank, it's pretty easy to have a consistent 300-mile cruise range.

I will post an exclusive first test-drive when the Mazda2 gets to Wellesley Mazda next month! Also I will post the invoice pricing for these cars!

MAZDA Top Mainstream Residual!

This should be great news for our '10 Mazda3 owners, got this news from Automotive News:

'Mazda has quietly risen to the top of the residual-value heap among mainstream brands, edging out Subaru and Honda.

Automotive Lease Guide projects that 2010 Mazda cars and trucks will retain an average of 54.1 percent of their sticker price after 36 months, up 10 percentage points from the 2005 projection.

Subaru's residual projection is 54.0 percent after 36 months, up 7.8 percentage points over 2005; Honda's is 53.7 percent, up 2.3 points in the same period.
Niche brand Mini, which sells only subcompact cars, is projected to have a residual value of 60.8 percent after 36 months, the highest of any brand. Mini's projection is 1.5 percentage points above its 2005 projection.

Matt Traylen, chief economist at Automotive Lease Guide, credits the new 2010 Mazda3 and 2010 Mazda6, which was redesigned for 2009, with elevating the company's residual projections.

The Mazda3 small car has an average residual of about 59 percent at the end of 36 months and the Mazda6 mid-sized sedan about 55 percent.

Eric Johnston, vice president of sales and field operations at Mazda North American Operations, says the key to strong residual values is creating good-looking, high-quality vehicles and then resisting pressure to oversupply the market. Mazda also shuns customer cash incentives and plans to sell no more than 6 percent of its vehicles to fleets this year.

Mazda3 unseats Honda Civic as Canada's best-selling car!

There's a battle raging over the northern border between the Mazda3 and Honda Civic: the Mazda3's 5,436 units sold in April outdid the Civic by 135, and through the end of last month the Zoom-Zoom ride leads the Honda by just 21 units. The rest of April's Canadian top five is filled out by the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra and Hyundai Accent. Compare that to April's American top five of the Honda Accord, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic and Ford Fusion. Mazda really have a hold on the Canucks!

We can’t wait for the day that Mazda3 outsells the Civic in the US, or just in New England would made me plenty happy!

2010 Mazda3 S 6-speed Long-Term Report #3 10,000 miles

It took me five months to reach the 10,000 miles mark. Thanks for all these business trips to Waterbury, Connecticut and Cape Cod Mazda!
I was driving down I-93 to Boston yesterday and the odometer jumped from 9,999 to 10,000 when I passed the Zakim Bridge. A great place to witness my pleasant 10,000 miles in this celestial blue 2010 Mazda3.

The driving experience:
My mpg has been a solid 27.4 over the 10k miles, 75% highway driving and 25% spirited city driving. If I stayed within 5 mph over the speed limit I should be able to bump the mpg by 1 point.
The Mazda3’s 2.5 Mazda MZR motor has plenty of pick up in the 6th gear, making highway passing an easy task, I have ran into triple digits without much effort during a trip back from Connecticut. In city it’s very quick and nimble, it doesn’t have the V-6 level acceleration but I am very happy with the power it has. On twisty back road is where the Mazda3 shines – extremely fun to drive, you feel connected to the road and confident taking sharp turns.
I got pulled over once during the 10k miles, a warning over a red light moving violation (it was DEFINITELY orange light) , even the police officer liked the celestial blue on this 2010 Mazda3.

Interior & Practicality:
The Mazda3 has a beautiful interior, the Bose system has improved after I adjusted the settings.
A surprise is I once drove off with the emergency brake half engaged and the trip computer reminded me immediately – that’s a great feature!
However, a major drawback for me is the lack of lumbar support on the ‘10 Mazda3s, I don’t understand why the old Mazda3s have them but the new ones don’t. It’s not comfortable for long-distance driving and it’s even worse for my 6’1 body. Nobody can sit behind me when I am driving – I pull the seat all the way to the back to get merely enough leg room. The trunk is small for my hiking gears and workout stuff.

I will probably be staying with this Mazda3 for a couple of thousand miles before I return it. I enjoyed driving this 2010 Mazda3 S 6-speed very much.

Mazda's iconic roadster celebrates its 20th birthday in 2010, as the first MX-5 Miatas that rolled off the line in Hiroshima, Japan, were 1990 models. This seriously entertaining little car has proven to be a real survivor, particularly in the always fickle U.S. market. Other automakers have tried and failed to break into the affordable roadster niche (which now hovers around the $25,000 mark), and only the Mazda Miata keeps on keeping on.

Since we're feeling celebratory, we took a 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring to our instrumented-testing facility and drove it to the limit and a bit beyond. Make the jump to see the numbers.

Although the MX-5 received minimal changes for 2010, the car benefitted from significant upgrades in 2009 that set it apart from the earlier third-gen Miatas we've tested. The redline for the car's free-revving 2.0-liter inline-4 went up 500 rpm to 7,200, so the engine was fortified with a new forged steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods with floating wrist pins, revised pistons with stronger wrist pin bosses, stiffer valve springs, and an oil cooler. Mazda also did some fine-tuning on the induction sounds to improve the Miata's natural soundtrack.

Additionally in 2009, the six-speed manual transmission (standard on the Grand Touring) was fitted with larger-diameter 3rd and 4th gear synchros, and the syncros for 1st through 4th all got a carbon coating which Mazda hoped would improve shift feel. Sixth gear got a little taller, too (0.787 vs. 0.832 in 2008), to promote better fuel economy and more relaxed cruising. "Relaxed" is a relative term, of course, as no Miata past or present has ever been anything close to a cruiser.

Regarding the chassis, engineers repositioned the front suspension's outer ball joints, effectively lowering the car's roll center 1 inch. Compression damping was increased in the rear, and the stability control system was recalibrated to intrude less into the fun.

Finally, slightly wider bumpers (complete with euphoric smile up front) lowered the 2010 Miata's coefficient of drag by 0.01 to 0.34.

Acceleration Comments: Tricky but not impossible to launch with just-right wheelspin to maintain revs and momentum. Shifter is good but not great like a Honda S2000's. Longer throws than I remember. Linear power doesn't wane near redline.

Braking Comments: Good fade resistance, talkative pedal. Some dive, but always predictable, confident and straight.

Handling Comments: Slalom: As addictive as any car could ever be in the slalom -- "Just one more and I know I could get that 6.0-second pass." The car is so malleable and responsive that it feels more capable than it actually is. Quite a lot of suspension windup/release for the sake of compliance, and ultimately, this slows its responses in quick transitions -- result is frustratingly close to awesome. Skidpad: Almost invisible hand of God keeps the car spot-on the circle with ESC on. Shutting it off results in an exceptional ability to dangle the tail out ever-so-little, but wow, what control and balance despite the so-so 0.87g. Steering is near perfect -- a little heavy.

2010 Mazda3 S sedan long-term report #2 @ 7,000 miles & comparison

The Good:
I found the car is quieter on highway now, EXCELLENT steering wheel feedback, very precise. A blast to drive on twisty 2-lane road. Beautiful exterior, excellent chassis!

Note: I recommend changing oil at 3,000 miles; I have noticed significant fuel consumption increase after 3,000 miles, and after changing oil the engine is better and my mpg increased at least 2-3 mile per gallon. My average mpg went up from 26.9 to 27.2 now.

The Bad:
I am 6'1 and it's hard for me to find a comfortable driving position without blocking the speedometer. Bose sound system is average, I could easily find many stock stereo better than the Bose in my Mazda3 (e.g. Mazda CX-9), part of the reason is sound deadening in my Mazda. The clutch has a very high & narrow engage point so it takes practice to drive smoothly.

The Comparison:

vs. 2010 VW GTI coupe 6-speed
I drove the GTI for about 100 miles only.

GTI wins on awesome interior, higher quality cabin, better sound system, quiet and smooth ride, very comfortable driving position (the sunroof in the GTI takes much less height than the sunroof in the Mazda), stronger engine - the GTI is noticeably faster than the Mazda3, but there is turbo lag; better grip than Mazda when taking corners, very stable on highway, has better mpg than the Mazda3 (though it requires premium gas) .

Mazda wins on handling, road connection, and it feels faster than it is. The GTI is more refined but somewhat isolated and less lively than the Mazda3. Mazda's headlight is 3 times brighter than the GTI, awesome!

Both cars are handsome, the GTI looks muscular and mature, but I personally prefer the unique smiling face of a Mazda3.
I also had horrible experience with a 2.0T VW Passat, VW's reliability sucks.

vs. 2010 Mazdaspeed3

I drove the 2010 Mazdaspeed3 for 50 miles only.
The MS3 has perfect shifter, is louder, is faster. Also I think it can get better mpg if you keep out of the boost range, aka<2k rpm. It has some smoke issue during my 50-mile trip, the turbo doesn't boost as brutal and raw as the older MS3, but it handles better.
The clutch on the MS3 is easier to operate than a regular 3. I also don't like the scoop on the hood for the MS3.

Conclusion:
I am very happy with my 2010 Mazda3 s, it is truly a driver's car!

"For years, the focus on safety and functionality has given us drab, uninspired vehicle interiors," said Ward's AutoWorld Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter. "This year's winners show style and original design is becoming as important inside the vehicle as it already is to the sheet metal outside."

A team of eight Ward's editors evaluated 40 vehicles that have either all-new or significantly upgraded interiors this year. The vehicles – both car and truck – were divided into segments, with one winner named in each category. In addition, Ward's bestowed special awards for outstanding achievements in key areas. Having both designations allowed judges to rank vehicles against the entire field, regardless of segment and price. Judging criteria included aesthetics and design harmony, comfort, driver information, ergonomics, fit and finish, materials, safety and overall value.

2010 Mazdaspeed 3 vs. 2010 Mazda 3 s 6-speed

I’ve driven the 2010 Mazda3 s 6-speed for 6,000 miles and also the previous-gen Mazdaspeed3, which is a beast to drive. (torque steer…) I always wonder how’s the new 2010 Mazdaspeed3 driving compared to a regular 3 so I took our just-arrived speed3 for a 20-mile spin and here is my report:

While I don’t like the Nav screen on the Mazda3, I love the keyless entry and push-start button, it’s so convenient! You will understand after a shopping trip or grocery run with both your hands full and trying to reach your key in the pocket.

Press the clutch, push the button and go, within 5 seconds you step in the car!

Here is the thing about the scoop on the hood:
The good: it’s functional, it draws air to the intercooler.
The bad: It doesn’t look as good as a regular Mazda3 hatchback without the scoop, in my opinion. It adds the ‘boy racer’ look which I personally don’t like.

Love the RX-8 style rim and projector-type fog light, I will take off the front plate bracket though.

Not a big fan on the red dot pattern on the door , like the red stitch on the arm rest.

Again, not a big fan on the red dot pattern on the seat… but it’s comfortable.

Hatchback is the way to go, very practical!

There is only the DSC button on the left.

I love the interior design, the steering wheel is too busy IMO. The added buttons to control the Nav and on-board computer are unnecessary, cruise control buttons are moved to an awkward position.

Gotta love this shifter! Awesome metallic feel and super smooth and precise. Better than a VW’s shifter and almost as good as an Audi’s shifter. It’s in a different league than the 6-speed shifter on a regular 3.

Like it or hate it, it’s more of a personal taste. I myself love the exterior design.
Driving Experience:
First Impression: the 2010 Mazdaspeed3 has less torque steer, but when I shifted to 2nd gear and waiting for the brutal pull it never happened as forcefully as the 2008 MS3 I’ve driven. I guess it’s a trade-off to minimize torque steer.
The car is plenty fast and extremely fun to drive in 2-3-4 gears. It’s just as noisy as it's predecessor (which means BOSE sound system is almost useless).
The clutch is easier to operate than a regular 3 and the older MS3.
The car corners harder and has less body roll than the old MS3, it handles better!
MPG:
There is a boost gauge to help you keep your right foot off the gas pedal! You can easily achieve better mpg in the 2.3 Turbo Speed3 than a regular 2.5L Mazda3 if you keep the car out of boost range, a.k.a. < 2000 rpm.
Comfort:
I’ll be honest, my 6’1 body does not fit very comfortable in a regular Mazda3 sedan, but the Mazdaspeed3’s hatchback design gives me more head room, and the seat is more supportive (leather). I feel more comfortable in a speed3. HOWEVER, Mazda seriously needs to widen the seats by 1-2 inches, the are too narrow.

Road Test – 2010 Mazda CX-7 2.5L 5-speed automatic

So I took this 2010 Mazda CX-7 i sport for a 20-mile road trip to give you some idea of how it rides and how it has improved from the previous models. (I’ve driven the 2008-2009 Mazda CX-7 2.3 Turbo for a couple thousand miles.)

First when you open the door you see more chrome interior and a brand new steering wheel. Mazda has removed the cruise control from the spoke to under the spoke, this is a change you have to adapt if you used to drive Mazda vehicles.

A glance of the center console, you can see some higher quality material being used in the 2010 Model, but other than that there is no major changes. A 5-speed automatic transmission with manual options is being used here.

Plenty of space in the back trunk, can fit 4 people’s hiking and camping gears but it’s a tight fit.

One improvement is the leather stitched arm rest on the door, makes the 2010 CX-7 feels a little more luxury.

Size of the storage part: average.

Very nicely updated center console, 2 screens. I would like to see the automatic climate control which is available on the GT trim level. Higher quality plastic is being used here.

Driving Experience:

Coming from a 2008 2.3 Turbo AWD CX-7, I want to get rid of its nemesis - lousy mpg and don't want to lose the excitment of driving a turbo charged SUV.It turns out that the 2.5L is just good enough to provide you a satisfying ride without travel to the gas station too often.

When I switched the ignition key on you can hear the 4 cylinder engine running under idle condition, I adjusted the manual seats to a comfortable position so I can relax my legs and read the speedometer, no problem for me (6’1). Turning on the base stereo radio, the sound quality is solid, the Bose system is not necessary at this car’s high-speed noise level, in my opinion.

Giving a little gas and you can hear the engine working, merge onto Rt-9 is no problem if you step on gas, 0-50 mpg comes quick, cruise at 50-60 mph you are getting 26-30 mpg according to the trip computer! Wow! the turbo CX-7 is hard to get more than 21 mpg on highway!

Handling is pretty much the same as the older model, although I feel more sure footed taking corners. The CX-7 takes bumps well so you don’t feel punished on the bumpy New England’s highway.

All in all I think the FWD 2.5L CX-7 is the way to go if you are on a budget, you get the looks and a very peppy and efficient engine (NOT a refined engine); if you like the punch from a turbo and added driving fun from the AWD, definitely go for the 2.3 Turbo AWD CX-7.

I would be more than happy to purchase this FWD SUV/Crossover for my personal vehicle to haul my hiking gears and friends, it will be a tough choice between the CX-7, the new 2011 Mazda5 and the 2010 Kia Soul for me ;)

Mazda announced today at the 2010 New York Auto Show that the 2011 Mazda2 hits dealerships this summer priced from $14,730 (*including the $750 destination charge). The cute little hatchback will provide some serious competition for the likes of the Honda Fit, and Ford Fiesta.

The base Mazda2 Sport model is powered by a 100-horsepower, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission.
The list of standard features is what we'd expect from a vehicle in this segment, and includes things like ABS, stability control, traction control, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo and 15-inch steel wheels. Upgrading to the top-trim Touring model will cost you $16,185 including destination fees, and adds alloy wheels, upgraded seat cloth, fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, a chrome exhaust tip and a rear spoiler.

MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development today confirmed that Patrick Dempsey will race a 2010 MAZDA3 prepared by Tri-Point Motorsports in the World Challenge race during the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend. Dempsey normally races a Mazda RX-8 in the Rolex Grand-Am GT series.

About the weekend and the difference in racecars, Dempsey said, "I'm thrilled to be able to race near my Los Angeles home. With the Grand-Am series, I've been able to race at many of the great tracks in North America, but now I have a chance to race locally. The Tri-Point MAZDA3 really impressed me during testing. I've never driven a front-wheel drive racecar that handled that well before. I shouldn't have been surprised though as my daily driver is a MAZDASPEED3. The weekend will also be personally rewarding to me as we'll be carrying the colors of our Dempsey Challenge."

2010 Mazda CX-7 Diesel with Sky-D engine first drive!

In Europe, where Mazda last year launched a diesel-powered version of the CX-7 that delivers 31.3 mpg on the European combined cycle, suggesting a city EPA number in the high 20 mpg range, and something in the high 30 mpg range on the highway. Ah, but what about performance? Mazda claims the 170hp, 2.2-liter MZR-CD common-rail turbo diesel-powered CX-7 takes about 11.0 seconds to get to 60 mph. That's a second longer than the CX-7 i, and 3.3 seconds longer than the Grand Touring.

But after a brief drive of the CX-7 diesel in Switzerland a couple of weeks back, we're convinced a U.S.-spec CX-7 diesel has the potential to be one of those rare vehicles that is greater than the sum of its parts. It's not just the gas mileage. It's the torque. With 295 lb-ft on tap at just 2000 rpm, the MZR-CD delivers the sort of meaty launch feel American consumers love. While the 2.3-liter gas turbo, which has 258 lb-ft available at 2500 rpm, delivers a distinct pause-two-three sensation as it spools up from idle, the diesel delivers useable grunt the moment you squeeze the accelerator pedal. The diesel CX-7 feels more alert, yet paradoxically, more relaxed, an ideal combination for a crossover.
